A Shoujo Kakumei Utena story that never was...

A: Have you heard the latest? *with hand to face after turning head this way and
that*

C: *drinking her tea with loud sipping*

B: No... what is it *head looks left and right*

A: Well someone wrote a love story.

C: *drinking her tea with loud sipping*

B: Was it by someone famous? I can get a copy and have the author sign it!

A: No one will step up and claim it... but it's the talk on everyone's lips.

B: Is it ... perverted or something?

C: *drinking her tea with really loud sipping*

A: No... that's what makes it odd.

B: Have you read it yet? *holding up A's copy from the table*

A: No... if the author is afraid to come forward I don't know if I'd want to
read it.

C: *who's been drinking her tea with loud sipping* I hear it has forbidden love.

A&B: Really?

C: Hai. *hands B her copy* Have my copy... I can get another. *walks off
whistling* Huu Huu

A: *doing the up and down squat thing* I don't know if I can read it.

B: *doing it in opposition* I don't know if I dare read it.

A: *to audience* Would you read it? Could you read it?

B: *also to audience* Could you dare read it? Would you dare read it?

A&B: *now off camera as the next scene with red drop screen comes up* Should you
even consider it? Should you dare consider it?

Utena, and Wakaba are sitting under the tree they have lunch at. It looks like
rain will be in their future... the clouds are there already... the sun is still
casting it's warmth. The campus is fairly quiet... more so than normal.

Utena sees that her friend has a new book,"I should probably get a hobby as
well..."

Eyes focused on the words in the book Wakaba says,"'Don't you already duel for
those you love?'"

Utena's eyebrow twitches,"Wakaba...?"

"Nani? Why the look? I was only quoting from the text? The heroine fights for
justice... and her friend is always getting into trouble... the funny thing is I
don't know the gender of her friend... it's weird... but enthralling...
beautifully written you should get a copy. I think you'll love it... it's so
romantic," says Wakaba with a heart popping out of her eye as she winks.

"But you said she's always dueling over her friend's fate... doesn't sound like
they have time for romance," Utena says laying back and looking up at the
clouds.

"Oh there's a line about that."

"It figures..."

"Don't be such a spoilsport! Ahem! 'When there is a love like our love... the
briefest moment is but a tender hour spent in loving company.' Waaaai!" Wakaba
clutches the text to her. Utena rolls her eyes. Wakaba doesn't notice,"Neh
Utena... why don't we ever talk like that?"

"Well... uh... huh?" Utena looks down and pulls Chu-Chu from her bento,"Ohayo
Chu-Chu... is your mistress about too?"

"Hai Utena-sama," says Anthy walking up the hill to them. She carries with her
one of her multilevel bento boxes. "Would you like to try what I made for
lunch?"

Wakaba closes her book and puts it down... it's one of those composition books
with the black and white blots on the cover... but it looks like all the pages
were ripped out with new pages put in it... if it wasn't for being rebound with
a simple cord... it would probably scatter in the sudden wind.

Anthy places the box down and reveals the layers... vegetable fried rice... egg
fu yung... won tons... and some fortune cookies that look like she made them
herself. It all looks like it was the forth or fifth attempt.

"I see you've been working on what I said. This looks great Himemiya!" Wakaba
gives her the thumbs up.

"But isn't this more a dinner setup than lunch?" Utena says appraising the food.

The Rose Bride looks at the food she prepared,"Is it?"

"Hai. But it's here now... and it'll work great with what Wakaba made."

Anthy simply smiles as everyone piles stuff into their bento boxes. Content that
it was well received.

Utena sees Anthy isn't eating,"Ano... Himemiya... you aren't eating?"

"I ate already... Saionji-sempai insisted..."

"He didn't hurt you... I thought he wasn't on campus anymore... You are okay
right?"

"Hai Utena-sama... he wanted someone to eat with him... while he read," Anthy
looked at Wakaba's book,"You have a copy also?"

"Oh that... it seems everyone has a copy... only 3 yen in the book store. You
two seem to be the only one's without a copy," Wakaba points out various groups
reading both quietly and laughingly... Tsuwabuki-kun can be seen running from
the bookstore after Nanami tucking one copy into his shirt and holding one up
and dashing to catch up to the younger Kiryuu.

Utena sighed in consternation at the scene,"Well anyway the author should be
proud. Their work is a complete success," Her view showed a nearly floored by
the beauty Juri quickly correcting her composure. "Seems everyone is reading
it."

"You'd think that... but..."

"But?"

"It's unsigned... the clerk was being mobbed by girls wanting to know who wrote
it. Guys too. But no one knows. Rumor has it... that... well it's silly..."

"You'll tell us sooner or later won't you so just tell us."

"Well of the top rumors... it was written by a member of the faculty...
someone on the Student Council... or... one of us three. Isn't that wild? I mean
it's totally unfounded," Wakaba suddenly looks into the book and then at
Utena... reads some more... then looks at Anthy who just smiles..."Did one of
you write it? Because then I'd have the first signed copy..."

"It wasn't me... I don't even know the title..." Utena went back to diligently
eating.

Wakaba looked to Anthy,"You then?"

But alas Anthy was making a little plate for Chu-Chu,"Hai Wakaba?"

"Nevermind," she handed Chu-Chu her last cracker from her own meal,"I shall find
out who wrote this! Nothing will stand in my way!"

"Neh... shouldn't you finish reading it first?" Utena asked before putting more
of Anthy's okonomiyaki in her mouth.

"Oh... yeah..." Wakaba laughed and picked the book back up.

"Oh my," said Anthy pointing at the title.

" "Flowering Illicit Love Affair"? Sounds like someone picked the wrong words...
Flowering I can understand... on this campus... but michinaranukoi... maybe they
meant Romance?"

Wakaba pounced on it,"Ah-ha an exchange student! But... no we don't have any
exchange students."

"Perhaps we should just finish our meal and puzzle over it later, Wakaba. I
guess I'll buy a copy to help."

Himemiya looked up the sun suddenly casting her eyes into shadow, "Should I buy
one too Utena-sama?"

"Um... I'll buy one for you when I get mine. I'd let you use mine but it's hard
for 2 people to read one book."

"Thank you Utena-sama."

"If a girl has a zit..."

"She can't go to the prom..."

"In order to go to the prom she must smash the zit..."

"Smash the world's zit..."

Juri and Miki join in half heartedly,"For the Revolution of the prom..."

Miki seated on a foot rest reading the book,"Ano... Nanami-kun... you should
just put some cream on that..."

Juri seated on another foot rest... reading the same book with the neck of the
outfit she's wearing undone,"You're letting it run your life. 'In order to go to
the prom she must pop the zit...'"

Miki clicked his stopwatch,"Juri is right on this... you're obsessing."

"Would you like to get in the elevator and try again?" Nanami looked at the pair
crossveined.

"That was the third time anyway... I've even forgotten why we are up here," Juri
flipped to the next page eyes going wide.

Nanami sat in a chair and pulled her book out... there was no foot rest... "Neh
could I have one of..."

They cut her off,"No... it's getting to the best part," Juri and Miki looked at
each other and where the other was in the book.

"Stop heating up the balcony you two."

Tenjou-san arrives and simply takes a chair with shaved ice set at it. She looks
over at Anthy deep in read... expression unreadable. She sighs before starting
into the shaved ice. She's dressed in her night clothes it's obviously later
than one would think from Anthy's uniform. "Ano... Himemiya..."

"Hai Utena-sama?" She looks up smiling.

"Aren't you coming to bed? It's really late and if you don't get your sleep."

"Hai Utena-sama." She seems to be about to just dump what she's doing right now
and head off to bed.

"Whoa... finish your shaved ice first... and I didn't mean right now anyway..."

"Hai Utena-sama," quoth Anthy as she sits right back down and her spoonful a
paragraph reading of the book.

"Neh... Himemiya... what part are you at? I'm wondering what I can look forward
to... the mushy parts are hard to read," and she blushes at that.

"I have only 19 pages left... I'm almost done."

"Wow, that's alot farther than me. I'm only 50 pages from the beginning...
you're a hundred pages ahead of me. How did you do it?"

"I just imagine they are people on campus... and everything works out,
Utena-sama."

"I was trying that too... only..."

"Only, Utena-sama?" The Rose Bride asked her groom finally when it seemed she
was going to leave the thought hanging.

"Well I tried using Arisugawa-sempai in my head as the lead but I couldn't fit
in my head who to use as the Distressed One... I went through the whole
Council... once I even used Kozue-chan and Miki-kun... but that didn't seem
quite right... of course I tried Touga-san and Nanami-kun... and that almost
worked... Juri almost worked... but I couldn't pair her in my mind with
anyone but no matter what I keep thinking it's me... which doesn't sit right,"
she finished... picking at her shaved ice,"Who do you use?"

Anthy didn't even blink, "I use you as the heroine Utena-sama."

Utena blushed,"But considering what... the lead characters do... I mean... I
don't think I'm like that with anyone... am I? I mean... who do you see as the
other person?"

Anthy got up and yawned lightly,"We should get to sleep Utena-sama... classes
run a little early tomorrow as you said before. Shall I give that to Chu-Chu
Utena-sama?" She pointed to Tenjou's shaved ice.

"Uh... hai... guess I have too much on my mind right now," Utena handed the ice
over to Anthy who took it to their room and gave it to Chu-Chu before changing
into her sleepwear. Utena came in then and paused at the sight of Anthy framed
in moonlight clad only in the air surrounding her. She turned her head.

Himemiya simply finished dressing and bookmarked her page in the book before
settling in for the night. Chu-Chu busied himself with the shaved ice having
missed the scene entirely.

She got her own copy out and curious leafed to the page Himemiya was on...
unconsciously she thought of herself as The Dashing Heroine...

The air seemed thick and heavy... slick with the musk in the room...
not five minutes had passed and yet Utena had her back in her arms...
cradled against the evils of the world. Held close in the glow of love they
shared. A glow brighter than the sun itself... with only the fog in the
room to dampen their spirits. She looked down at the beautiful face... made
prettier by what they had done. This was how they should be... how they
should always be.

The eyes opened... the mouth smiled ever so slightly and the voice
like wind on roses said,"My Utena-sama... let's go to dreamland
together..."

Utena blinked... the face had changed... suddenly it had been her and Anthy...
she had to talk a minute to slow her breathing... a minute to realize Anthy was
talking... saying how it's a wonderful book. Utena was still flushed
when she spoke, "What... what did you say Anthy?"

The darkness that was The Rose Bride's bunk said,"Utena-sama... now is the time
of dreaming, and though it's a good book should not keep you from it. That is
all Utena-sama."

End part one.

  Part 2

"Utena Tenjou... you must pick one and only one of them... who will you pick,"
asks Kip the announcer for the Game show.

"But what happens to the one I don't pick?"

"They get a fabulous Marriage to Saionji! And that's not all... a Fun filled
honeymoon... just like your own package... so who will you pick!" Kip (It's
really Touga with his hair in a pony-tail) Martel asks again,"Oh and you have 5
minutes to pick... take your time."

"What happens when I run out of time if I haven't picked yet?" Utena said with
her dream voice.

"Well Saionji will get Anthy who he will love but also mistreat from time to
time... he has a strong backhand, and Wakaba will spend her remaining years as a
spinster! Never to love again. So which will you pick... 3 paths are prepared
before you... on Let's Make a Duo! The show where happy triples become happier
mixed doubles..."

Wakaba in tears,"You should pick Himemiya... I could get used to Saionji... I'll
miss you though."

Utena's perception centered on Anthy,"What are your thoughts Himemiya?"

Anthy with her sweet smile firmly in place,"Why Utena-sama. I have no thoughts.
What ever you decide works for me."

And Tenjou-san woke with a start.

"Sorry Utena-sama. I didn't mean to wake you with my question as to what
you wanted for breakfast, but whatever you decide DOES work for me," Anthy
Smiled her special smile.

Utena's heart sank,"Listen... Himemiya... you decide breakfast... your decision
counts here too."

"Ah... well... in truth I'm not hungry this morning Utena-sama, but if you are I
can make whatever."

"No... that's okay... I'm not really hungry either... if..."

"'If,' Utena-sama?"

"If you were though I'd... eat with you."

"Thank you, Utena-sama," answered The Rose Bride as she finished getting
dressed.

Utena walked in a daze to her uniform and put it on. As she did so her eyes
fixed on Anthy's copy of the book... the bookmark was removed... placed on top
of it lovingly. Utena paused,"Lovingly? Why did I think that?"

The door popped open,"Utena!" Wakaba called before seeing that her 'boyfriend'
was naked as a jaybird,"W-ow... this is like a part in the book... when the
other character walks in on the Dashing Heroine... 'framed by only the light of
morning like an angel about to spread her wings...'"

Utena blinked,"I know that part... didn't the next bit go,'to envelope me and
carry me to parts unknown by those not in love.' Didn't they have sex right
then? What a quote to make Wakaba..."

Wakaba turned away to hide her blush,"Well I'm not the one who remembered THAT
part so well... so who is the deviant with thoughts of illicit romance here...
you or me?"

Utena noticed something,"Cute Chu-Chu very cute."

Wakaba turned around, and Utena could swear she had sighed wistfully... of
course she thought she had too. She wondered what was wrong with her to think
such so often... and about both of them... she blinked... she HAD thought of
..."Best not to dwell."

Wakaba gave a sidelong look,"Well? What was cute? And Why shouldn't we dwell on
it?"

"Huh? Oh Chu-Chu had pointed at BOTH of us."

"Ah like page 75 where the roulette marble jumped the table when the intrepid
pair bet in opposition! It could not intervene between them!"

"Wakaba really..."

"What? I think it's romantic. They also had this beautiful kiss..."

"I'm not kissing you Wakaba," Utena slung her bag over her shoulder.

"Bet you're good at it though. Just kidding. But boy are you blushing. What were
you dreaming about... can I have the details? Who was he? I hope it wasn't
Touga..."

Utena looked away,"Best not to dwell on my dream really... it wasn't very
happy..."

Wakaba worried for her as they left the dorm,"Were you being chased?"

"No..."

"Did you do something wrong in it?"

"Not yet... it was a fork in the road dream basically... like a game show..."

"Door Number 1 Door Number 2 or Door number 3... I don't like those either. I
had one the other night about 3 yummy recipes... and I had to pick just one..."

"I only had 2 choices... with a third if I didn't pick one of the first 2... and
the third was ... I don't wanna talk about it."

Wakaba smacked herself in the forehead,"We've been through this... you can't
bottle this stuff up inside Utena! You have to talk about it or do something
about it. You can't just hang onto it. So tell me about the dream... I mean
nightmare. It was a nightmare right?"

Utena sighed and stopped walking,"Wakaba... if you had the choice of those
recipes again... but had only 5 minutes to choose one of the three... or pick
run out of time and end up with none of them and have to eat only natta for a
week... could you pick in time?" Utena resumed walking... trying to purge the
recipe analogy out of her head... "Two yummy dishes... or the natta," kept
rolling through her mind.

"Oh no I'd hate that... it would be like the recipes never meant anything to me
at all if I didn't pick... and yet all three do."

"Three?" Utena asked lost in her thoughts again.

"Yeah the 3 recipes... did you have only 2 choices... that would be tougher...
of course it would be really tough if they weren't just recipes... can you at
least give me a hint?"

"I had to choose people."

"What?" Utena was slowing down so Wakaba took on her cheering up stance and
grabbed her arm,"Well if it was between your prince and Touga... pick the
prince..."

"It's not as simple as that."

"Oooh... that is bad... well if you read the book you should cheer up... just
don't read the last 4 pages... they aren't too cheery..."

"I forgot it in my room..." she said looking into her bag for a second.

Himemiya who'd been walking behind them held out hers... and Wakaba broke hers
out of her bag. Utena froze... they were the same distance away... holding out
the same book... she could almost feel Kip glaring at her and the clock counting
down. She was about to panic when Chu-Chu came running in with her copy over his
head. She wondered only briefly if he'd been accidentally forgotten or had
realized she didn't have it a while back and had been bringing it up till now.
She examined it... it was dusty enough to have given Chu-Chu trouble with it on
the stairs. The other girls walked up.

Anthy handed Chu-Chu a cracker,"Neh Chu-Chu it looks like you saved Utena from
choosing."

Wakaba patted it's head,"Yeah she looked ready to faint. She must have had to
choose between one sport or another... like an interschool championship being
held the same day as another championship."

Anthy smiled,"Hai Utena-sama would want to be at both events."

Wakaba put on her victory face,"Ah-ha! The Mystery is solved! Now to find out
who wrote this book!"

The Bell for class rang... all three had to move double time to make their
classes.

  Part 3

Juri Arisugawa was still disturbed by her own dreams... she'd never ever
pictured herself as a lounge singer... and yet last night she was draped over
Miki's piano... in a smokey night club belting out lounge hits she didn't even
know. She pulled out her locket and looked at it... Shiori had been her manager.

She closed it and had it gone when she heard the footsteps... and recognized
them. "And how is our reigning Duelist?"

"Huh? Oh... well... I don't think I know to answer."

"That's unlike you to sound so down, Tenjou. Are you having a relapse of the
turmoil from before?"

"Turmoil yes ... but it's different... I don't know how to explain it."

"You'll join me for lunch then, and we can discuss this."

"Really?"

"If I repeat myself the offer dies with the words."

"Ha... Hai. I'll tell Wakaba and Himemiya to not expect me."

Anthy waved from the Rose Garden's door,"I heard Utena-sama I'll tell Wakaba.
Don't worry."

"Thank you Himemiya. I'm sure Wakaba made something delicious... I envy both of
you."

Juri turned and quirked an eyebrow,"Are you saying you don't want to have lunch
with me?"

"It's not that... I couldn't talk to them about this... so the food wouldn't
taste so good today anyway."

"Ah a smile for the people you care about. I understand."

"It's not like that..."

"Sorry Tenjou... I've been reading that book as well," sempai held up her
copy,"And so I'm reading things into everything lately."

"I bet it isn't affecting your dreams though..."

Juri frowned,"Actually it is. This way."

"Ha... Hai."

"So Tenjou... what are people saying about me lately... you seem to be one of
the ones who knows and is willing to tell me."

"Some of the students think you wrote The Book. There's the rumor that you are
trying to get one of the teachers to leave by ignoring them... and there's a
rumor that you have a special locket... with... well... it's cruel... but some
think that locket has a picture of you in it. That's all I know of rumors... but
remember I barely knew who was on the Student Council before..."

"The Duels and your engagement... How is the Rose Bride if you don't mind me
asking."

"Himemiya is Himemiya."

Juri nodded,"And how is Shinohara-kun taking your engagement."

"I Don't have the heart to tell her what's going on... and I didn't think it was
within the rules anyway."

"No actually it isn't... so what was this dream? My information leads me to
believe your disposition is because of this Book or this Dream you had."

"It's not easy to explain sempai..."

"We are both here because of it... I think it shouldn't be a mystery... don't
you?"

"Buying lunch was very generous of you... I owe you at least a similar issue.
It was one of those dreams were you either choose between 2 things you love...
say... fencing and ... I dunno... bowling... or choose neither and ... feel like
you're going to hell."

Juri mulled on it,"Well there's hoping you can finish your set with nothing but
strikes boosting your hand so high your bowling opponents can't hope to beat you
even if you leave... and arriving right for your match at fencing. This doesn't
always work out..."

"You as usual sound like the voice of experience, Sempai."

"I had to do similar once. So what was your actual dream?"

"Something I couldn't just do both with."

"How horrible is doing neither?"

"It would be like I never existed."

"Then you have to choose. If there is no other way... like say a sudden sprain
of your lead ankle that only allows you to pick the sport that it would be
better suited to do in it's pain."

"Or make one not like you... or look for someone else?"

"Not like you? Like on page 100 where the Heroine tries to make Her Love despise
her?"

"Actually I'm not that far yet."

"This is my third read of it."

"Who do you imagine as the Heroine?"

"Myself."

"And as Her Love?"

"Someone I knew once. You? I can imagine you see yourself as the Heroine... but
what of Her Lover?"

"I... nevermind... I can't seem to make up my mind."

"Well when you do the story will progress all the faster."

"Yeah I just hope not so fast I don't know what's going on anymore."

"Like now?"

"Yeah."

Miki is with Anthy and Wakaba. Miki is standing, and Anthy is seated watching
Wakaba and Miki make grand gestures.

Himemiya stood when Utena walked over,"How was your lunch with
Arisugawa-sempai?"

"An Inquisition... but I lived."

Wakaba looked over thoughtful,"I'm sorry I pried so much earlier, Utena."

"Nothing like what Sempai did."

Miki clicked his watch then said,"Um... I feel out of the loop here. Was the
dream as bad as mine? In it I was being chased by a 40 foot tall version of
Kozue-chan who breathed fire and stepped on me. Terrible thing I know... I
haven't been able to face her."

"Utena-sama probably wishes her dream was so definite, Miki-sempai."

Wakaba jumped in,"I can see how you'd be upset by that if it's any
consolation..."

Utena nodded and smiled for Miki's sake,"I hope your life returns to normal
extra fast... and that she never hears about it."

Miki went wide eyed,"You and me both. Say wanna help out here?"

"Uh... not really... I can't act... I'll watch though... who's who?"

Wakaba cut in,"I'm the Dashing Heroine of course."

"She's doing a really good job of it, Utena-sama," answered Anthy,"Oh... out of
tea... shall I get you one also, Utena-sama?"

"Uh... yeah Himemiya," when she was out of earshot,"So Miki enjoying your role?"

"Wakaba is a great improvisational actress... not that I'm any judge."

"Ah so you're after Wakaba too eh?" Utena teased.

Wakaba broke into the joke,"Yeah well you can't have me," and she glomped onto
Utena,"Neh, My Utena?"

"Uh... hai hai..." And she was released.

"Utena... you should be doing this instead... you're a natural for Dashing
Heroine," Miki said as he scanned ahead in The Book,"Besides there's a kissing
scene coming up..."

"We could make Anthy the Dashing Heroine then..."

"You're embarrassing me Utena."

"I know I know... sorry about that. But just go on... ah Himemiya you're back
they were just about to start back up."

"Well it would have been rude not to wait for you Himemiya-san," Miki said
blushing. "'Against the laws of king and country I would wed thee if I were but
able... but your family better than mine it is.'"

Wakaba took on her forceful stance,"'We should care not for those beggars at the
table of bliss for they know not the feelings which you and I possess. Please
let us just be... you and I... together. Love is what we have... and all we'll
ever need. The rest is but icing on a donut... it makes it sweeter still but it
is simply extra... unneeded... like a golden sculpture when one possesses the
natural beauty of the golden nugget already. Bed down now my fair one, and I'll
kiss away your worries.'"

Miki embarrassed beyond words couldn't say his line and Utena stood up to point
out the next part of the text... and caught the kiss herself. She blinked before
stepping away, face flushed,"Wakaba?!"

"Na-ni?" she looked and saw Miki had slipped behind the tree, and that she'd
kissed Utena. "Um... I'm sorry... I was caught up in the scene, Utena."

"It's... alright I stood up to point out Miki-kun's line, and simply got caught
by the lips of Dashing Heroine Wakaba Shinohara. It's okay really."

"Well why don't you and Anthy try the next part... kissing the great and
wonderful Utena Tenjou has thrown my acting out the window... I can't think
straight."

"But... uh..."

Miki sat down where she had,"Go ahead really... I have to slow my own pulse," he
had out his stopwatch and was breathing slowly. Wakaba sat down staring up at
her. It made her feel like the whole campus was watching her. Of course that
wasn't the case others were reading it or play acting it.

The Rose Bride took a glance over her lines before standing up and taking the
"stage" opposite Her Duelist. She fell into her lines like she'd been practicing
for days,"'For our evening's vigil we shall surely pay... but not one moment of
it do I scorn for now that I hear the cock crow I feel somehow redeemed.
Redeemed in your eyes. I cast doubt upon thee... and scorned thy advances for
thou art a woman, and as sweetly brash as thou art it seemed alien to be coming
from one such as yourself. Have pity upon my woeful whimsy... for I should have
never doubted thee. Thou art my Groom in all ways... and like you I care not
what family... King ... nay even God says of our union. And now I hug my Dashing
Heroine who released me from myself,'" said Anthy as she embraced Utena.

Utena thought it was an eternity before she could raise The Book to eye level
and try to read the words. Her eyes refused to focus on anything but Anthy and
so she did her best to... wing it from memory. "My sweet one. Your faith in me
in sorely misplaced... for I too doubted thee... I doubted I was enough for you.
I worried all the time," she knew she was messing it up now... she felt she had
the spirit down at least," Always was I worrying that you were destined for
another... that I was only someone who was but your victor of the moment... that
in time you would scorn me and spurn me for another when fate decided we were
not meant to be. I'd lie awake at night dreading the day that you would
leave...'" she dropped the book and held Himemiya close to her,"'I do not have
the words for how I felt when you first entered my life... I was trapped in a
spell of long ago and you and your roses caught me from afar. And held me. Held
me such that I would break. Oh and break I did the time you were not mine.
friends provided no such solace as your presence had given.

"'Oh and the happy day when we were together again, made the time away a test. A
Test for how I feel about you. And it showed me that you were not someone I
could have outside my life. I thank cruel Fate for showing me what my heart
could see but eyes and brain could not,'" and Anthy leaned up to kiss Utena...
and Utena leaned down to meet Anthy. They shared a kiss while Miki flipped
around still for what Utena was talking about. Wakaba snatched the book away
from him and glared at him, pointing at what he was missing by looking away. And
soon both spectators were sighing at the beauty.

A sudden clapping by a pair of young hands broke the scene calmly and gently...
Nanami's words of,"Mitsuru-kun stop clapping that's not even close to what the
text says," weren't as well received.

"But Nanami-san... it was beautiful nonetheless," Tsuwabuki-kun apologetically
retorted.

"I guess that kind of thing doesn't need a script. Come Mitsuru-kun..."

"Uh... yes ma'am." He paused to bow to them and vanished after his Idol.

Utena was scanning through the book,"But I read that scene 4 times in study
period."

Miki smiled,"Sometimes you have to improvise to make the music sound better.
Lunch is almost over," he looked at Himemiya,"You... were... um... nevermind."

Anthy smiled to his departing back as she cleared up the lunch scene.

Wakaba smirked slightly,"You know if word gets out that you're such a good
kisser... all the girls will be lined up to play the part of 'Her Lover'" And
the bell rang,"See you back in class!"

"Himemiya what did she mean by that?"

"The Part was meant for you alone it seems Utena-sama. Perhaps someone had you
in mind when they wrote it?"

"Yeah makes me wonder who wrote it too."

"You should move on to class Utena-sama."

"Hai hai the Dashing Heroine heads off to class."

Anthy performed her smile and Utena walked off to her next class. Himemiya
watched her go with a single tear in her eye.

Chu-Chu dove into the bag with the leftovers and proceeded to clean the plates.
"Neh, Chu-Chu Utena-sama's nice isn't she."

"Chu!" said the festive eater with his thumb up as he smiled slash paused for
air between chews.

  Part 4

"Neh Utena... walk me home."

"Nani?" Utena answered her friend.

"I'm serious... I've been watching the news..."

"And you're worried some mugger will attack you? Fine Wakaba. I'll walk you
home."

"Yes with the Dashing Heroine protecting me no harm could ever befall me,"
Wakaba looked triumphant.

Utena smiled uneasily and turned to Anthy... to find her smiling back at
her,"Ano... Himemiya..."

"Hai... I'll head to the dorm by myself, Utena-sama. I'll see you later,
Utena-sama," And The Rose Bride picked up Chu-Chu from Tenjou's shoulder and
headed in the other direction.

Wakaba leapt onto Utena's back,"Now we're alone Utena."

"Ha... Hai. Neh you feel warmer than usual... are you feeling okay?"

"I'm doing fine enough. Actually I haven't felt this good in a long time."

The silence dragged itself into the scene, almost deafening were it's footsteps.
It soon dragged itself back out when Wakaba asked,"Neh Utena... you were really
good at lunch time. I almost cried."

Utena blushed as she tried to quell troublesome emotions,"Well I'm no good at
acting. Just trying to get the lines right."

"Actually you missed the lines Utena... but that doesn't matter one bit. It was
beautiful. You think we could go over that scene when we get to my dorm?"

Utena blushed again,"Ha... hai."

"Halfway there... I'll get down now. You need your strength."

The troublesome emotions welled up again.

Wakaba's reaction when she got Utena into her dorm was less than
helpful,"Victory!!!"

"Eh?"

"I'm one of the first people alone with you in a bedroom! I beat the world."

"Is that in The Book? Remember I haven't gotten very far."

Wakaba crossveined in exasperation and handed her a tea,"I'll find our
dialogue... I think I know an even better scene."

"Better?"

"Hai!" and Wakaba rifled through her copy while Utena drank the tea out of the
can. "Here we are... page 130!"

"I'm only to 75..."

"Still Utena... is it too steamy for you? Ah-ha! It is! This should be okay
enough then. Ahem! 'My Dashing Heroine,'" Wakaba took on her dramatic pose
talking to a fake audience to their left like this was a play and not a
novel,"'I must thank thee again... that knave almost knew me... and had he known
me I know not what done would I.'"

"'Speak not of such things... our love shown through would it have. No number of
lovers could separate us from the feelings we have. No amount of lust outside
this room could come between our sacred emotions. Worry not on such things.'"

"'But,' Is it okay if I call the Dashing Heroine after you? saying The Dashing
Heroine so much is going to make me hoarse."

"Hai Wakaba," Utena grinned mischievously,"Should I call the other person after
you?"

Wakaba answered just as a light flashed passed the window obscuring her
face,"Fair's fair. Ahem,'But Utena... I see the way the people look at you... I
know the way the King feels about thee. Would it not be simpler to simply part
ways love or no... I feel our feelings complicate our world so much that surely
disaster looks for us in every house and villa... creek and river...'"

"'Gentle Wakaba. Fear Not! No harm shall I ever let harm you... no villainous
sword will ever harm you... no person could come between us. My love for you is
like the love in books in plays... it is perfect, glorious and radiant like your
face shining in the morning light as it does now. Beckoning me forward...
calling to me... and I like one trapped by the Siren sweep forward to embrace
thee,'" Utena hugs Wakaba close with the book over her friend's shoulder,"' and
show you that we are one piece on the chess board of existence... to be moved
together... inseparable... unable to be described by words alone.'"

Wakaba was quiet for a second, then said,"'My Utena... if never are we to be
like this again. If never are we to know love as we do this very moment. If the
world would make us part our ways... then share my bed just this one time as if
we'd never done so before. For a memory I would have us make even if nothing
else from this room could be taken,'" Wakaba looked up at Utena with tears in
her eyes. Utena dropped the book to the ground and kissed away her friend's
tears, and gently kissed her on the lips... a kiss like a prince gives to his
beloved princess.

"Himemiya... I... stayed over at Wakaba's... we went over The Book... for a
while... and by then if I'd come back it would have woke you up. So I stayed
over there instead. I'm sorry."

"It's quite alright, Utena-sama. Chu-Chu and I finished reading The Book
together. The ending is quite sad Utena-sama."

"Uh... Oh? What happens. I don't know if I'll ever get to that part."

"Chu-Chu you shouldn't eat Utena-sama's lunch. What will she eat then?"

Chu-Chu looked crestfallen, and held up one of his crackers to Utena.

Utena smiled on the verge of tears at Chu-Chu,"Oh no Chu-Chu I can't accept
that. You and your mistress are far to put out by me as it is. I'll be fine."

Anthy smiled at Utena,"But Utena-sama... you must eat... I know I'll make
something nice for dinner to make up for Chu-Chu's appetite, Utena-sama. I have
just enough time to shop this lunch period. Come on Chu-Chu," and the pair left.

Utena put her head on her knees,"But I'm not worthy of it Himemiya..."

Wakaba's voice behind her startled her,"That's my fault. I knew what would
happen... I yearned for what happened. So it's my fault Utena-sama... not yours.
I'll understand if you don't like me for coming in between you and Anthy like
that."

Utena's mind stumbled,"Nani?"

"I see how you look at each other... I was right here yesterday watching as you
made that beautiful speech to Anthy. She's lucky to have to have you Utena, and
I'll walk away if you want me too..." Utena wiped a tear off her face,"Do you
want me to walk away?"

Utena smiled and shook her head,"I wouldn't want either of you out of my life.
You are my best friend. Himemiya is my friend as well."

"But I have a beautiful memory to sustain me now... I'll stay away..."

"Listen... Wakaba."

"Yes Utena?"

"The dream... I had the other day... I was on a game show... a guy who looked
like Touga with a mustache... He called himself Kip or something... anyway... in
the dream I had 2 Choices... I could marry either you... or Himemiya... and the
other would get to marry Saionji... prepaid honeymoons in Paris were part of the
package... but I couldn't pick. When time started dragging on... Kip informed me
that I only had 5 minutes to choose one or the other and if I didn't in that
time... I'd get neither... and Himemiya would get Saionji... and you'd become a
Spinster... never having love again."

"And you picked Himemiya, neh?"

"No... I practically woke up screaming. I couldn't decide. And it hurt."

Wakaba smiled back to her old self,"And here I was hoping I could have had
Saionji."

Utena chuckled.

"But Utena... I can find someone... I know I can... you and Himemiya... I don't
know it seems destined or something... you were talking about her in your
dreams. I was SOOO jealous... but it seemed so right," Wakaba paused to
sigh,"But if she ever upsets you she is answering to me."

"Wakaba..."

Miki suddenly walked up,"Information seems to be pointing that it's one of the
history club students."

"History Club? We have a History Club," Utena looked at Wakaba who was already
rushing off.

"I'll find out who wrote it yet!! Wakaba Shinohara will uncover the author!"

Miki looked after the zooming Onion Princess,"She really wants to know who wrote
it doesn't she?"

"I think she's wondering if the author is cuter than Saionji..."

Miki clicked on his stopwatch,"No one even knows the gender of the author... may
not be someone from this campus," Miki pauses,"Is Anthy busy tonight? I saw her
carrying groceries to your dorm from the Student Council balcony."

"Himemiya must have run..."

"I don't understand."

"Chu-Chu polished off my bento... and Anthy is going to make up for it by
cooking tonight."

"My sister is always trying to cook for me... Well I have to do my own Author
Hunting before class."

And then Tenjou was alone with her thoughts and troublesome emotions.

A: Did you hear?

B: Hear what?

A: Someone found a copy of the original.

B: What was in it what was in it?!

A: There are extra pages...

B: Really?

A: Really.

B: What's on them?

A: Here's a copy... read it for yourself.

B: I don't know I'm satisfied with the story thus far.

A: It's even more romantic with these extra pages.

B: Really?

A: Really.

C: It's also sappier. *reading the addendum*

B: Then I'll read it! *pauses* Oh that's exactly what I was hoping would happen!
Wait this page says something totally different.

C: Multiple Endings are sappy.

Vacant except for a large collection to children's balls in the colors of all
the flowers in the Rose Garden... it looks like a giant game of marbles is
being played... only the thing is only the balls near duelist and supporting
cast members seems to be reacting to anything with the other balls seemingly
nailed in place. A grey ball with a W on it smacks into a white one, whirling
with it for a moment before the white ball slowly rolls towards a purple one.
The Grey one with the W on it then begins bouncing after a peach colored smaller
ball.

As that is happening a creamy beige ball is kicked in from off scene... it
bounces amongst the unmoving balls before stopping within the influence of the
orange one.

The scene changes again to the upper hallway by the Rose Garden>

Juri Arisugawa stepped away from the boy who had told her what she needed to
know. The medium blond lad scampered quickly away with his prize for the
information. "Arisugawa-sama's autograph!" he was heard to say to himself over
and over.

The Autographer was not best pleased with the information she had... regardless
that it was spot on. "I wasn't even close." That was all she said before turning
and moving with purpose off screen.

Below Anthy closed the Rose Garden door. In her hands was a plastic bag with a
few sheets of paper hastily shoved into it before for all intents someone had
tried to bury it. "Chu-Chu... let's show this to Utena-sama. It should cheer her
up."

Chu-Chu now with the bag tied to his back gave a proud,"CHU!" before
catching up to his mistress.

"Page 199... almost done..." says Tenjou as she leans over the wall of the
bridge reading in the book with a steady tone of pink in her cheeks. "Maybe when
I'm done all these troublesome emotions will be done with me. 'But for the cruel
hour approaches one thing shall solace bring me. When next life I have I, I
shall seek you out... and perhaps then we shall be happy.'"

"But of course Utena-sama," says Anthy suddenly to her side.

Utena almost drops the book but manages to snag it... however one page falls
from the binding. She can't reach it and it falls into the water and washes away
with the current. "I'll have to borrow your copy Himemiya... I've lost my final
page... I don't know how it ends now."

Anthy smiled her smile before picking up Chu-Chu who handed over the plastic
bag.

"What's this Himemiya?"

"The author tried to bury some alternative endings in the Garden. Chu-Chu's
friend found them while trying to catch a fly. I haven't read them really... I
simply glanced at the first page,'Alternate Endings: 1 of 6 (DH=President,
DO=Vice President)'"

"Touga as the Dashing Heroine? Saionji-sempai as the Dear One? No wonder it was
buried," Utena halfheartedly opened the ziplock bag and pulled the pages out.
Her Bride took the empty bag from her and tossed it over the edge of the
bridge,"Himemiya!"

Anthy smiled her smile and pointed to a middle schooler fishing it out of the
water and putting it into her garbage bag. The girl waved her pole up at them in
thanks before dashing off.

"Sorry I yelled."

"It's alright Utena-sama."

"No... I reacted to fast."

"Your reflexes are why you do so well in sports, Utena-sama."

"That's... not... what I..." her eyes glanced at the second sheet,"'(DH=Kozue,'
And ... Miki?"

"It would be cute Utena-sama. Twins in love."

"Yeah I suppose... This one's interesting... Nanami and Mitsuru-kun."

"Oh my."

"Hey... one's missing... 6 of 6 is missing."

"Are you going to read them now, Utena-sama?"

Utena has part way into one with Juri and some person named Shiori without
realizing it,"Sorry... I just didn't know who the other person was, and was
trying to figure it out."

"It's alright Utena-sama," Himemiya pulled down the edge of the last page to
read the principles,"My my... look at this Utena-sama."

Utena was struck silent for a moment before saying,"This one's... us?"

"Hai, Utena-sama."

End part 6.

Was anyone expecting that? The missing pages with multiple endings thing? I
almost did that once with something I'm currently still adding chapters to.

"Did you enjoy the meal Utena-sama?" Anthy inquired as she cleared the table.

Utena blinked,"Hai hai. You didn't have the go to all that trouble," she
realized she'd been staring at the page again.

"It was no trouble Utena-sama. Utena-sama?"

"Sorry... I was staring at the page again..."

"Does it bother you?"

Utena had to think about that one,"It doesn't seem wrong if that's what you
mean. Just feels like someone's been into our lives without permission. And..."

"And?"

"And I wonder what the last alternate ending is."

"Perhaps it will show up Utena-sama."

MEANWHILE

Wakaba slipped quietly out of the Rose Garden again that day. She smiled
jubilantly and slide her hand over her book bag,"I have my prize for defeating
the mystery of the invisible author... the only autographed copy..."

A voice behind her startled her,"So you got to the girl first?"

"Eh?" she spun around,"Arisugawa-sempai? What girl?"

"How did you find the author out?"

"I checked around for writing projects both here and in the middle school. I
remembered some of the language classes on that level had projects right about
now... and I found her."

Juri's face could not be seen,"And you have the final copy in your bag? May I
see it?"

"Actually... this isn't the real final copy..."

Juri was taken aback,"Explain."

"Florida-kun... the author... wrote it for her French class... but she didn't
like her first ending so she made some others... but couldn't choose which one
she really liked in time before the project was due. She was also worried
someone like Nanami Kiryuu would hurt her... so he took her name off the
piece... and hid the other endings."

"How many endings are there?"

"Let's see... the actual ending... with the Heroine being burned at the stake,
and tossed in the river... then there are some endings... with school members...
specifically named. Each ending is tailored. Florida-kun spent real weeks...
spying on all our lives..."

"So which ending did you steal for yourself, while burying the others for
Himemiya to find?"

Wakaba grinned,"We all have our secrets, Arisugawa-sempai," and with that Wakaba
dashed off.

"Probably her and Saionji," was Juri's parting comment before wandering off
herself.

"No Utena-sama you can read it first. I don't mind."

Chu-Chu got Utena's attention,"What is it?"

Chu-Chu took out one of his crackers and placed it next to another cracker...
and placed a napkin in front of both crackers.

"We should read it together?" Tenjou looked to Her Bride who smiled.

By the light of static on the TV which sounded like the rain that had welled up
outside the nearly empty dorm they silently read the page together. And then...
when they had finished the page they turned blushingly and looked at each other.
There was a silence where they just regarded each other's face.

Then Anthy spoke,"'My heart...'"

"'... doth lie open before thee,'" finished Her Groom as they leaned in towards
each other for a simple sweet kiss.

  Part 8

The Captain of the Fencing Club wasn't about to knock again and she opened the
door as Miki tried to stop her.

Nanami stumbled back,"I wasn't expecting to see that!"

Miki peeked around the corner of the door to the shared room of Utena and Anthy,
and blushed red as a beet.

Utena stirred and blinked at them the morning sun framing her face and
blotting out her naked form,"Neh... it's Saturday. What do you guys want?" She
had yet to realize she had slept on the floor.

Nanami couldn't speak and hid behind Juri aghast. And so Juri spoke
then,"Tenjou... we are here for the other endings to The Book."

"Oh... lemme see here..." she fumbled her hand on the table next to her, and
then stood and walked over and handed the pages to Juri. She rubbed at her eyes
sleepily.

Juri checked them... and snatched one out of the stack, before passing the stack
to Miki. Miki blushed even harder and fished out the copy for Nanami who almost
ripped it from his hand.

Juri turned to Utena finally,"Thank you for these... and this is the time when
we must part."

Utena yawned mightily,"Yeah yeah go... we need our sleep."

Juri quirked an eyebrow,"Didn't know you *slept* naked. Good Morning Utena
Tenjou."

The groom looked at her bride and then at herself as the door closed behind her.

Utena was hesitant,"Himemiya?"

Anthy smiled and put on her glasses,"Hai?" Only when she said it there was an
odd echo to her voice...

SUDDENLY... Utena woke up. She blinked and looked around... everyone near her
looked like they'd just woke up. She noted Wakaba was still asleep,"Sorry about
that."

Juri hid a light proper yawn behind her hand,"Don't blame yourself for
anything," she looked at the stage,"I'd blame Romano-kun... the boy on the
stage for his bad report on St. Florian. He's bored almost the entire audience
to sleep."

"I see... so that was just a dream then... it was so real though" Everyone
looked at her shocked before looking away suddenly. Nanami coughed into her
hand.

Juri then spoke,"A dreamworld is as "real" as those who live inside believe it
to be."

"Have we fulfilled our obligation as 'Role models to the next generation' yet?
I'm bored," complained Nanami.

"So bored you kept me awake with your snoring," added Miki blandly.

"What was that?"

"Uh... nothing..."

Utena chuckled then looked over at Himemiya who said right then,"It was a
beautiful dream though, neh Utena-sama?"

Utena placed a light hand on Anthy's, "Hai."

Wakaba chose that moment to wake up... as did most everyone as Romano-kun
finally stopped droning... most likely the sudden stop of sound leapt into
people consciousness and roused them. "That was a nice nap... and such a
wonderful dream!" she paused,"Neh why are you all staring at me... oh no I was
the only one asleep wasn't I!? Did I snore? What a role model I turned out to
be."

Suddenly disjointed clapping went up and everyone joined in... except the group
which seemed to have had the same dream.

"Romano L'amour everyone... and his Treatise on the Feast of St. Florian. The
day for that is coming up for those of you who wish to celebrate it... let's
give L'amour-kun another round of applause."

"Nanami-kun... now we can go."

And they filled out to let the dusty blond boy have his fame applause.

End Part 8. End Fic.

So... thoughts opinions? eldrick@mindless.com is the place for them.

Juri's line "A dreamworld is as "real" as those who live inside believe it to
be." is Gally-chan's (Cyborg Mermaid to many), who I begged for the use of the
line when she used it in a recent post to Usenet.

This fic was made to order for Roshni Kasumo... who said something to the effect
there wasn't enough Utena shoujo-ai fic.

=O==O==O==O==O=

So what did everyone think? besides I need to introduce characters...

I could and probably should do that now... ahem! Warning... it's done in no
particular order...

Wakaba Shinohara= Utena's best friend... often calls Utena her boyfriend.
Sometimes leaps onto Utena's back to test her friends strength. This has been
called the Wakaba Glomp. Her mother used to call her "The Onion Princess." as
did classmates. For her making bento boxes for Utena is a labor of love.

Anthy Himemiya= The "Object" of the Duels at Othori academy. Engagement to the
Rose Bride can lead you to the Power of Dios... a power which can revolutionize
the world. She tends the School's Rose Garden, and has a pet monkey Chu-Chu who
has big ears. Currently engaged to Utena even though calling it an engagement is
embarrassing to Utena.

Juri Arisugawa= Captain of the Fencing Club, and also seemingly able to scare
the wits out of Teachers. There's a rumor a teacher left just because Juri
glared at her. I think she's the finance manager for the Student Council, which
she is also on. As a Duelist she also bears a Rose Crest Ring.

Miki Kaoru= Othori's champion Pianist, and currently their second best Fencer
interschool. Has some issue with a stopwatch. He is the Student Council's
Chronicler. As a Duelist he also bears a Rose Crest Ring. Stopwatch issue has
been linked by some to his Letters from "End(s) of the World" His sister
Kozue... is a walking spoiler... you'll just have to get some Utena tapes neh?

Saionji Kyouichi= Captain of the Kendo club. The First Utena was victorious to
in the dueling arena. Notorious for the Anthy Slap... which he often uses on
her. Possesses some interesting views on the universe. As a Duelist he also
bears a Rose Crest Ring. He is Vice President of the Student Council.

Touga Kiryuu= President of the Student Council. Playboy. Manipulator. He is
Nanami's Brother. As a Duelist he also bears a Rose Crest Ring. To discuss him
further really is spoilery...

Nanami Kiryuu= Patron Saint of the Brother Complex. She is often the brunt of
some of the more bizarre episodes in SKU. She has 2 separate followings... these
three girls who follow her everywhere...and help her with her evil machinations;
and Mitsuru Tsuwabuki... who does a bit of her homework and plans her day out
for her... even though he's still in middle school.

The Shadow Play Girls= These "three" girls play out some of the elements of the
current episode against all kinds of outlandish backdrops.

Utena Tenjou= Last but not least I cover the Heroine of SKU. When she lost her
parents when she was young a Prince came to her aid allowing her to move on past
her parent's death. So enamored with what he'd done for her was she that she
herself wanted to save someone and vowed to be a Prince herself. Her Duelist
Rose Crest ring was given to her by her Prince. He said it would guide her to
him one day. She's a normal enough girl by her own beliefs... she's looking for
a man in her life, much like also her friend Wakaba is. This is of course
blurred by the fact she has a specially made copy of the boy's uniform, and that
she's better than most guys at her school in the sports she plays.

Florida, Romano L'amour, are all tempies for the fic. The Feast of St. Florian
is on May 4th. And being that it was close... and the definition was a little
lower... how appropriate in a way that the fic had someone doing a report on
him, neh?

http://www.catholic.org/saints/saints/florian.html

Florian also means flowering in this name dictionary I have and I almost made
Roman L'amour, Florian L'amour... but that might have over shadowed SPG C and so
I went with her in a disguise instead and changed the name.

When they are talking about the title being off it is because the author
thinking with a base language of Japanese wrote something then in French...
which was then translated back. Sort of like putting a webpage through
http://bablefish.altavista.com if you put something through it... then translate
it back to the other language... it can really mess up meanings. Couldn't find a
real place for that within the fic itself that's why it's "here"

the actual title is hayazaki michinaranukoi... which like infrequent otaku
found phrases... is just a direct translation of flowering and "illicit love
affair"

Would you believe babelfish wouldn't translate romance into French for me? kept
giving me "le roman"... like someone from Rome.

-recently I heard le roman IS romance... but due to French not wanting to make
-new words but reuse old ones until no one knows what's going on, le roman now
-means book... at least it isn't as bad as l'ordinator which means
-mathematician, pocket calculator, and computer... talk about needing context
-clues...

Anyway... I'll shut up now ^-^
